History 5

bambax on June 17, 2018

Not just music history, but history in general.

History told forwards is superstition: trying to show that what came after was inevitable, when in fact it was one future among an infinite number of different possible futures.

History told backwards makes sense: look for the seeds of post events, in the past.

However the human mind loves nothing more than causation; we see cause and effect everywhere even where it’s not, we like “stories”, we don’t understand, don’t believe in, and outright reject chance.

Democracy 3

.

A democracy that lives within its means is a democracy. A democracy that spends more than it takes in in tax revenue is a nation of beggar and debtors.

Only countries that live within their means can be democracies. A country that lives on borrowed money like the U.S. cannot control its own destiny. That is in the hands of the worldwide bond market.

The Man of Steel, 3

.

During story discussions for The Dark Knight Rises in 2008, David S. Goyer, aware that Warner Bros. was planning a Superman reboot, told Christopher Nolan his idea on how to present Superman in a modern context. Impressed with Goyer’s concept, Nolan pitched the idea to the studio in February 2010, who hired Nolan to produce and Goyer to write based on the financial and critical success of The Dark Knight. Nolan admired Singer’s work on Superman Returns for its connection to Richard Donner’s version, and previously used the 1978 film as casting inspiration for Batman Begins. “They had [Marlon] Brando and Glenn Ford and Ned Beatty and all these fantastic actors in even small parts,” Nolan continued, “which was an exotic idea for a superhero movie at the time.”

The Man of Steel, 2

.

On February 24, 2010, it was announced that David S. Goyer is writing the script for a Superman film called The Man of Steel.

On March 10, 2010, Christopher Nolan himself confirmed that he and Goyer have been working on an idea for a Superman film. Nolan says, “He basically told me, ‘I have this thought about how you would approach Superman.’ I immediately got it, loved it and thought: That is a way of approaching the story I’ve never seen before that makes it incredibly exciting. I wanted to get Emma [Thomas] and I involved in shepherding the project right away and getting it to the studio and getting it going in an exciting way… A lot of people have approached Superman in a lot of different ways. I only know the way that has worked for us that’s what I know how to do.”

Reboot

With the financial and critical success of The Dark Knight, Warners said of the reboot Superman film, “We’re going to try to go dark to the extent that the character allows it.” Legendary Pictures president Thomas Tull added that “Superman needs a powerful antagonist, a worthy opponent,” wanting to evoke Superman as an “angry God”.

Paul Levitz stated in an interview that Batman holds the key to the Superman reboot. He elaborated, “Everyone is waiting for Nolan to sign on for another Batman, once that happens, the release date for Superman and all other future projects will follow.”

Peter Norvig

.

# Norvig talks about the job interview process at Google and says that the best signal is if somebody has worked with one of their employees and they can vouch for the candidate. He also talks about “resume predictor” that takes resume attributes such as experience, winning a programming contest, working on open source project etc and predicts fit. He also mentions assigning of scores 1 to 4 by interviewers and generally turning down candidates who get a 1 by any of the interviewers unless someone at Google fights for hiring them.

Early life, education, and early career

Hyneman was born in Marshall, Michigan and raised in Columbus, Indiana. Describing his early life, Hyneman said “I was a problematic kid, to be sure. I left home when I was 14 and hitchhiked all over the country.”

He earned a degree in Russian linguistics from Indiana University. A variety of careers fill his resume, including scuba diver, wilderness survival expert, boat captain, linguist, pet shop owner, animal wrangler, machinist, concrete inspector, and chef. Bo Peep

.

Bo Peep does not appear in Toy Story 3. It is implied that sometime between the events of Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3, Bo was sold in a yard sale with her Sheep. The only toy to mention her was Rex when the remaining toys remember their friends who are no longer with them. When Rex says her name, it is apparent that Woody is still saddened and hurt over her loss. However, she appears only as a background toy in archive footage at the beginning of the film during a home video montage of Andy as a child.

Paul (octopus)

.

Paul (hatched January 2006) is a common octopus living in a tank at a Sea Life Centre in Oberhausen, Germany, who is an animal oracle and now retired predictor of football matches, usually international matches in which Germany was playing. He came to worldwide attention with his accurate predictions in the 2010 World Cup.

2010 FIFA World Cup

Paul’s accurate choices for the 2010 World Cup, broadcast live by German news channel NTV, endowed him with celebrity status.  Paul predicted the winners of each of the seven 2010 FIFA World Cup matches that the German team played, against Australia, Serbia, Ghana, England, Argentina, Spain, and Uruguay.

Paul correctly predicted the outcome of the semi-final, by choosing the food in the box marked with the Spanish flag. German supporters drew hope from his incorrect choice for the Germany versus Spain match in the UEFA Euro 2008 but were disappointed.

Paul maintained a 100% accurate record during the tournament by correctly predicting Spain’s victory over the Netherlands in the final.

Grigori Perelman

Riemannian geometry and geometric topology

Notable awards

Fields Medal (2006), declined
Millennium Prize (2010), declined

Sir John Ball, president of the International Mathematical Union, approached Perelman in Saint Petersburg in June 2006 to persuade him to accept the prize. After 10 hours of persuasion over two days, he gave up. Two weeks later, Perelman summed up the conversation as: “He proposed to me three alternatives: accept and come; accept and don’t come, and we will send you the medal later; third, I don’t accept the prize. From the very beginning, I told him I have chosen the third one… [the prize] was completely irrelevant for me. Everybody understood that if the proof is correct then no other recognition is needed.
