Now-state is the summation of all past events,

acting on the initial state of the universe.

In this sense, time is a counting number:

counting the number of events since the big bang. 

For states, the now-state is not the summation of all past states. 

In this sense, time is an ordering number:

putting different states of each “same” object in order.
