    * Next to the originator of a good sentence is the first quoter of it.

    * A great man quotes bravely, and will not draw on his invention when his memory serves him with a word just as good.

    * Genius borrows nobly. When Shakespeare is charged with debts to his authors, Landor replies: “Yet he was more original than his originals. He breathed upon dead bodies and brought them into life.”

Hyperthymesia

Hyperthymesia, also known as piking or hyperthymestic syndrome is a condition in which the individual possesses a superior autobiographical memory, meaning they can recall the vast majority of personal experiences and events in their lives.

Defining characteristics

Individuals with hyperthymesia can recall almost every day of their lives in near perfect detail, as well as public events that hold some personal significance to them. Those affected describe their memories as uncontrollable associations, when they encounter a date, they “see” a vivid depiction of that day in their heads. Recollection occurs without hesitation or conscious effort.

It is important to draw a distinction between those with hyperthymesia and those with other forms of exceptional memory, who generally use mnemonic or similar rehearsal strategies to memorise long strings of subjective information.

Memory loss

BBC Brain Story, 2

… and I’d go on to explain that much of what we take to be memory loss has other explanations.

For instance, as our values change with age, we often don’t care about certain things to the degree we used to, and we therefore don’t pay much attention to them anymore. The “memory problems” of the elderly are often simply due to the fact that they haven’t noted something that they find rather uninteresting.

Photographic memory(過目不忘)非常重要。

Memory, time, and technology

“Cole has been thrust from another world into ours and he’s confronted by the confusion we live in, which most people somehow accept as normal. So he appears abnormal, and what’s happening around him seems random and weird. Is he mad or are we?”

— Director Terry Gilliam

12 Monkeys studies the subjective nature of memories and their effect upon perceptions of reality. Examples of false memories include:

* Cole’s recollection of the airport shooting which is altered each time he has a dream.
* A “mentally divergent” man at the asylum who has false memories.
* Railly telling Cole “I remember you like this” when a barely recognizable Cole and Railly are seen in disguise for the first time.

References to time, time travel, and monkeys are scattered throughout the film, including the Woody Woodpecker “Time Tunnel” cartoon playing on the TV in a hotel room, The Marx Brothers movie Monkey Business (1931) on TV in the asylum and the subplots of monkeys (drug testing, news stories and animal rights). The film is also a study of modern civilization’s declining efforts to communicate with each other due to the interference of technology.

Copy Me, 3

Cumulative concept of time, 8

Since my present-self have the memory of my younger self, my younger self is part of my present-self.

1. What is the meaning of the “same” file?

If two files contain exactly the same data, they are the “same” file.

2. Memory is the definition of identity.

Since I have the memory of my younger self, I am the same person as my younger self. Moreover, since I have more memory than my younger self, I am more than my younger self. My younger self is part of me.

3. If I am a book, my younger self is like the one with fewer chapters:

younger self ~ chapter 1,2,3

older self ~ chapter 1,2,3,4,5,6

Memento 3 E

Reincarnation is a process of “Memento”.

If reincarnation does exist, the cause of most people do not know the meaning of life is that they have forgotten what has happened before their current lives.

Studying history is a good way to reduce this problem.
