LIGO

As of July 2010 LIGO has never conclusively detected any gravitational waves at all. Since Einstein’s General Relativity requires gravitational waves and the LIGO specifications ensure it is sensitive enough to detect them if they exist, LIGO’s failure forces the question whether General Relativity is a valid theory.

Always make new mistakes, 2.2

Loop Quantum Gravity 2

Working on string theory using the methods from loop quantum gravity was a lot of fun.

On one of the few occasions when I talked to Richard Feynman, he said that many theoretical physicists spend their careers asking questions that are only of mathematical interest. “If you want to discover something significant,” he told me, “only work on questions whose answers will lead to new experimental predictions.”

The key thing that Amelino-Camelia and others realized is that we can use the universe itself as an experimental device to probe the Planck scale.

Past papers 24.1

Whole Internet User’s Guide and Catalog

The Whole Internet User’s Guide & Catalog, by Ed Krol, was published in September 1992 by O’Reilly. The Los Angeles Times notes that the Whole Internet User’s Guide and Catalog was the “first popular book about the medium” and “was later selected by the New York Public Library as one of the most significant books of the 20th century.” The title and format were inspired by Stewart Brand’s Whole Earth Catalog.

Library of Alexandria

.

The first known library of its kind to gather a serious collection of books from beyond its country’s borders, the Library at Alexandria was charged with collecting all the world’s knowledge. It did so through an aggressive and well-funded royal mandate involving trips to the book fairs of Rhodes and Athens and a (potentially apocryphal or exaggerated) policy of pulling the books off every ship that came into port. They kept the original texts and made copies to send back to their owners.

A First Course in String Theory, 2

It is a complete surprise that gravity emerges in string theory. Indeed, none of the vibrations of the classical relativistic string correspond to the particle of gravity. It is a truly remarkable fact that we find the particle of gravity among the quantum vibrations of the relativistic string.

This book will explain in detail how string theory, at least in its simplest form, is nothing but the quantum mechanics of classical relativistic strings.

Multi-mind

This essay is adapted from a dialogue on 2010.04.09.

(Kinon: Your theory can explain something that “one-mind theory” cannot.)

Yes.

(Kinon: That is very interesting. You told me about “playing politics with oneself” several years ago (2003). For example, if you know that your tomorrow-self will be likely to be lazy, you present-self have to figure out how to prevent your tomorrow-self from being lazy.)

I consider self-at-different-time = different selves.

(Kinon: I understand what you mean.)

I understand what you understand.

Transcender time

This essay is adapted from an dialogue on 2010.04.09.

I have transcended past-present-future in my mind. The future may be as fixed as the past.

(Kinon: Determinism?)

I have transcended Free-Will/Determinism. Like “finite” and “boundless”, they are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Our universe is finite and boundless, just like the surface of the Earth. The surface of the Earth is both finite and boundless.

(Kinon: I agree that Free-Will and Determinism are not necessarily mutually exclusive. They may be the same thing.)

NO! It should be “They may be two aspects of the same thing.”
