《紐約嫻情》是香港女歌手陳慧嫻，於 1993 年拍攝的音樂特輯；監製金廣誠，編導盧冰心；香港時間 1993 年 10 月 10 日（星期日）晚上 8 時至 9 時 05 分，於香港無綫電視翡翠台首播。

這個節目是為了，讓歌迷認識並了解，當年正值如日中天，卻遠赴美國讀書的陳慧嫻，在美國紐約的點滴。節目形式為邊播放，陳慧嫻的多首經典歌曲，並拍攝她在紐約多處地方留下的倩影。然後在每首歌曲播放完結後，有慧嫻的自白，剖析她在美國獨自生活的一點一滴。

When this music special premiered in 1993, my TV was showing it in the background while I was having my dinner. I was not watching it. So I did not know the content. But still, I remembered the atmosphere broadcast by it.

In an afternoon in 1996, it was broadcast again. I took a VCR cassette at once to record it. However, I was already a few minutes late, missing the first part of the show.

I watched this music special after every last exam.

In 200x, I bought a TV card just to transfer the music special from the VCR to my computer. However, I have already lost both the VCR cassette and the computer file.

Why self-fulfilling?

If you act as if your future wife exists, you have a much higher chance of finding her, because you have actually been providing the environment for her to exist.

If you act as if your future wife exists, compared with assuming not having one, you live completely differently. You will make yourself financially stable; you will earn and save money for your future wife and children. You will make yourself healthy so that you can live long enough to finally find her; and then stay with her for decades. You will make and meet genuine friends, for you know that one of them is either your future wife or the one who introduces her to you.

If you know that your future wife exists, you will not have any romantic relationship with anyone that is certainly not your future wife, no matter how beautiful she is. Actually, you will not start any romantic relationship with anyone at all, unless she is potentially your future wife.

You will keep writing letters, sending them to the future; to your future wife. Once your future wife realizes that those letters may be actually for her, she will find you to confirm.

This was a virtual machine running the installation of MS-DOS 6.22 in the program VMware Player.

VMware Player was able to run virtual machines, but not to create one. Luckily, there was a website that helped me create virtual machine files. A virtual machine file is just a VMware-formatted text file. It defines the specifications of that virtual machine.

Running MS-DOS 6.22 was just for nostalgia. The real reason for learning virtual machines was to use the mechanics software library of the textbook “Structure and Interpretation of Classical Mechanics”. That library was available only for Linux.

Whether “afterlife” exists or not depends on your definitions of “self” and “afterlife”.

At one extreme, the definition of “afterlife exists” is that, after death, the same fixed self will continue to exist; “you” will exist in exactly the same way as before. In this definition, afterlife does not exist.

Note that even before death, during your normal lifetime, there is actually no “same fixed self”, “you” keeps changing every day and every second.

At the opposite extreme, the definition of “afterlife exists” is that, some aspects of you continue to exist in some way. In this definition, afterlife exists.

For example, if some of your writings still exist after your death, they will preserve some of your mind.

Year 2000 Reloaded

These are what I kept reminding myself during my Age of University.

1. I think, therefore I am

A lot of times, something seems to be a deadend.

However, once I have faith that a solution may be possible and start to think, most of the time, that “deadline” is actually resolvable.

2. Nothing Less

A lot of times, an action seems to be insignificant.

However, actually, every action may have infinite consequences, especially when you cultivate it.

3. The Aladdin Factor

A key to get a meaningful life is to dare to ask other people or yourself for answers, advice, or favours, when necessary.

Don’t be afraid to ask, as long as a request is ethical, reasonable, and polite.
