Moving from permanent to contractor.

I made the jump 5 years ago and have worked for a number of companies since, on 6-12 month contracts. The money has jumped each time, such that I’m on what I consider to be silly money now for the job I do — Ireland, not US.

The work is always interesting for at least 6 months and I learn a ton of new stuff with every contract, much of which I use when building my own products (Downtime between contracts).

Every aspect of contracting is better than being permanent: the ability to jump ship quickly without affecting my hireability, the exposure to so many different technologies and different ways of doing things, the constant freshness of new things and new people, the ideas that come with seeing how different teams create and build different software, the ease with which you can step into new contracts (often one 30 minute interview as opposed to multipel interviews tests and take home projects for perm roles), and of course the money.

In terms of learning, each contract is like spending 3 years in a permie job, and I’ve had 7 in the past 5 years.

Referrals tend to be a really fantastic way to bring people in and should be the first place you go. If you leverage each of your first ten hires’ networks, chances are you’ll meet some excellent candidates. When done right, internal and external referrals can scale your company pretty efficiently. Sit down and get your engineers to physically list out the best and smartest people they’ve ever worked with and then go after them with crazy intensity. As an added bonus, referral candidates might be easier to close because a friend’s recommendation goes a long way.

Earn respect

Prisons: How do you earn more respect in prison?

There was a time when I believed respect was about others seeing me as a tough guy. Over the years with maturity as well as help from programs like the TRUST and The Last Mile, my belief system has been challenged and as a direct result, my belief system has changed.

Now I see in prison, as well as in the free world, respect starts with self. Since my belief system has changed, the way I interact in my environment has changed, and the way my environment interacts with me has also changed. I no longer hide or run away from how I really feel. I don’t gossip or talk about people behind their back. I try as best I can to remain fair and impartial.

I can’t say that it gains respect with everyone. I can say it gains my respect with those who have respect for themselves.

那要視乎「不穩定工作」的收入多，還是「穩定工作」的收入多。如果「不穩定工作」的平均收入，遠多於「穩定工作」，那就不算是「失業」。
