Advanced course == course in advance

One of my favorite classes in college was a physics course taught in this way:

1. Before class, we were assigned to read a chapter from the textbook, understand the material, and complete two or three homework problems from the material we had just self-learned.

2. After submitting homework, lectures focused on discussing the concepts more in-depth. Everybody already had a baseline knowledge, so the professor would highlight the important takeaways, applications, live demonstrations of concepts, etc. I found these lectures engaging because I had already learned the material – and the lectures focused on mastering it.

3. Sometimes there would be follow-up homework problems focusing on advanced applications or derivations. These advanced problems were closest to exam questions.

Some takeaways for me:

  • If we didn’t have homework to do before class, I doubt I would have consistently learned the material before lecture.

  • Lectures taught us more than the “what” – it taught us the “why” and how these concepts related to other areas.

  • Lectures focused on answering questions, exploring curiosities (like “what if” questions), demonstrations/experiments, and mastery. The professor added value beyond the written material!

I hope this helps OP because it sounds like they have material prepared beforehand, which means that the lectures could go beyond the material.

Lectures On Computation

Feynman’s philosophy of learning and discovery comes through strongly in these lectures. He constantly points out the benefits of play around with concepts and working out solutions to problems on your own before looking at the back for the answers. As Feynman says in the lectures: “If you keep proving stuff that others have done, getting confidence, increasing the complexities of your solutions — for fun of it — then one day you’ll turn around and discovered that nobody actually did that one! And that’s the way, to become a computer scientist.” Imagine that you are explaining your ideas to your former smart but ignorant, self, at the beginning of your studies!

If you act as if your future wife exists, you have a much higher chance of finding her, because you have actually been providing the environment for her to exist.

If you act as if your future wife exists, compared with assuming not having one, you live completely differently. You will make yourself financially stable; you will earn and save money for your future wife and children. You will make yourself healthy so that you can live long enough to finally find her; and then stay with her for decades. You will make and meet genuine friends, for you know that one of them is either your future wife or the one who introduces her to you.

If you know that your future wife exists, you will not have any romantic relationship with anyone that is certainly not your future wife, no matter how beautiful she is. Actually, you will not start any romantic relationship with anyone at all, unless she is potentially your future wife.

You will keep writing letters, sending them to the future; to your future wife. Once your future wife realizes that those letters may be actually for her, she will find you to confirm.

Note that even before death, during your normal lifetime, there is actually no “same fixed self”, “you” keeps changing every day and every second.

At the opposite extreme, the definition of “afterlife exists” is that, some aspects of you continue to exist in some way. In this definition, afterlife exists.

For example, if some of your writings still exist after your death, they will preserve some of your mind.

Whether “god” exists or not depends on your definition of the word “god”.

In some definitions, god does not exist, because of the definitions’ self-contradictory nature. For example, god is good but he wants you to suffer for no reason.

In some definitions, god is possible to exist. For example, a god is any being that has a higher level of consciousness than a human being.

We can say that a human being’s consciousness is higher than a dog’s, in the sense that a human can understand things that a dog cannot. For example, most dogs do not understand what a computer is.

Similarly, a dog’s consciousness is higher than an ant’s. An ant’s consciousness is higher than a tree’s. A tree’s consciousness is higher than a rock’s.

In the opposite direction, it is highly possible that in this universe, there are beings that have a higher level of consciousness than human beings. It is highly unlikely that human beings are the highest beings.

Even within the human being species itself, different people can have different levels of consciousness. Even within a single person’s lifetime, one can be at different levels at different ages.

In some definitions, god can exist. You become that god.

In those cases, whether god exists or not depends on whether YOU are willing to become that god, taking up his responsibilities.

So in theory, there is no free will, because the future is already fixed, by the physical laws.

However, even if we knew the exact physical laws, it would be still logically impossible to get all the data of the present state of the whole universe, because it is logically impossible for any observer to observe itself, with 100% details, directly. For example, no camera can take a picture of itself directly.

So “in practice”, which is actually also “in principle”, there is free will, because logically, no one can predict, with 100% accuracy, your future actions.

.

In one logical sense, the future is already fixed, so there is no free will. In another logical sense, the future is fixed, but no observer can know that “fixed future” with 100% accuracy, so there is free will.

As a result, whether you label your actions are due to “free-will” or “not-free-will” has no real consequence. In other words, whether there is free will or not has no meaningful difference.

The difference that makes no difference makes no difference.

So you can actually transcend the free will problem altogether. You can just ignore it and live your life.

Or, you can somehow capitalize on this freedom of labelling your (future) life as either fixed or free, depending which label is more beneficial for you in a particular situation.

For example, when you are highly under pressure, you know that everything is fixed by the physical laws, from god’s point of view. When you are highly above pressure, you know that you are partially responsible for creating your own reality, because the future is not fixed for any one observer, for there is no “god’s point of view”.

You have the flexibility to label it in one way or another.
