As opposed to the Dilbert Principle, the Peter Principle assumes that people are promoted because they are competent, and that the tasks higher up in the hierarchy are more difficult to excel at. It concludes that due to this, a competent employee will eventually be promoted to, and remain at, a position at which he or she is incompetent.

這段改篇自 2010 年 3 月 18 日的對話。

你要記住，這裡的技巧是，wavefront（波陣面）和 wave propagation direction（波動傳送方向）是互相垂直的。在這裡，我簡稱 wave propagation direction 為「wave ray」。如果那個 wave 是 light wave（光波）的話，wave propagation direction 就是 light ray（光線）。每逢題目問你有關 wavefront 的東西時，你就先把它化成 wave ray 的問題，做法就會容易很多倍。

沒有人教過你，就當然是想不到。

千萬不要以為，自己可以想得到這些技巧。

那我為什麼可以「想得到」這個技巧呢？因為當年有其中一位老師教過我。那他為什麼可以「想得到」呢？他從他的老師，或他的書本，得知這個技巧。那這個技巧原初是從何而來的呢？某個物理學家，花了數個月，或數年，經過反覆思考，而發明出來，然後發表給其他人用。

物理學家是研究員。研究員的職責，就是花極長時間，例如數個月，或數年，反覆思考同一個問題。但是，平常的物理用家（工程師，物理教師，物理學生）是沒有這個「福利」的，尤其是中學的物理學生。一個中學生有很多科要兼顧，根本沒有什麼時間可以給自己原創一些物理技巧。

所以，「我應該由自己想出大部分題目的做法」是一個瘋狂的想法。但是，大部分學生，包括我年輕時候的自己，也有這個瘋狂的想法，導致浪費了極大量的時間，損失了超級多的分數，斷送了最理想的前途。

Gravity and the Quantum

A detailed study of these excitations may well lead to interesting dynamics that includes not only gravity but also a select family of non-gravitational fields. It may also serve as a bridge between loop quantum gravity and string theory. For, string theory has two a priori elements: unexcited strings which carry no quantum numbers and a background space-time. Loop quantum gravity suggests that both could arise from the quantum state of geometry, peaked at Minkowski (or, de Sitter) space. The polymer-like quantum threads which must be woven to create the classical ground state geometries could be interpreted as unexcited strings. Excitations of these strings, in turn, may provide interesting matter couplings for loop quantum gravity.

Nolan first pitched the film to Warner Bros. in 2001, but then felt that he needed more experience making large-scale films, and embarked on Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. He soon realized that a film like Inception needed a large budget because “as soon as you’re talking about dreams, the potential of the human mind is infinite. And so the scale of the film has to feel infinite. It has to feel like you could go absolutely anywhere by the end of the film. And it has to work on a massive scale.” After making The Dark Knight, Nolan decided to make Inception and spent six months completing the script. Nolan states that the key to completing the script was wondering what would happen if several people shared the same dream. “Once you remove the privacy, you’ve created an infinite number of alternative universes in which people can meaningfully interact, with validity, with weight, with dramatic consequences.”
